Our project’s mission:
“ Promote ethics in the business community through chambers of commerce.”
Our foundational belief:
“ The long-term success and prosperity of a market economy, business, and
individuals are dependent on ethical business practices.”
Anderson University SIFE is about developing passionate leaders who
positively impact the world. We bring together students from all over
campus in a variety of majors, with a variety of interests, who are
excited about learning and serving. We are dedicated to making a lasting
impact in not just the Anderson/Madison County community, but across
the world through our community impact, entrepreneurial impact, global
impact and environmental impact programs.
One of several key projects is Ethics Advancement, which was created
in the spring of 2008. Partnering alongside our Business Advisory Board,
we worked with the local Anderson/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.
Under the supervision of Keith Pitcher, president of the chamber, our
team developed a code of ethics that could serve both the chamber and
its member businesses.
Fundamentally, we believe the long-term success and prosperity of a business is dependent on ethical business practices. Using that as our starting point, we researched codes of ethics implemented in other organizations. With that information in hand, we drafted a code we felt would be suitable for the chamber. After some feedback and revision, we arrived at a final version that both SIFE and the chamber were satisfied with implementing. On November 18, 2008, the Anderson Chamber voted unanimously to except the code of ethics into their bylaws. This included adding a phrase to the end of their mission statement that reads: “…through ethical business practices.”
Our vision for this project is to see it catch on here locally and throughout
the country. We believe that in raising awareness of what it means to be
ethical, we are challenging businesses to be operating with integrity—which
in the long-run will result in increased sustainability. We look to have
continued chamber support followed by the support of its member businesses.
It is great to have the chamber on board. However, we would also like to
see their members pledging to be ethical as a result of the chamber’s
move toward ethics. We view the chamber as the catalyst for this change.
